Jazz on the Road

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

This Saturday, Jazz on the Road bring us an ‘Afro Jazz Special’. With a theme such as that, I’m sure you can conjure up some kind of image of the night that awaits you. I’m also sure you realise that this image won’t even come close to the actual live experience.

Featuring live…

UNITED VIBRATIONS
Reppin’ our extended family… UV have built up a reputation for turning pavements into parties. Their music is 12tone. Expect to be infected by their tight sounds, raw flow and dangerously contagious vibes.

AWALE
Awalé is a London based Afro Gypsy Funk musical project with members from Tunisia, France, Cuba and England. Musically, Awalé draws on these influences whilst reflecting the diversity of multicultural London.

… As if this wasn’t enough, just for good measure, there will also be jazz dance performances from Maki & Kola (Jazzcotech Dancers) to keep us tantalized and some heavy sound selections from Tony Nwachukwu (CDR) and Koichi Sakai (Afrobeat Vibration).

Jump on board the train… Freedom awaits you!

I’m going to keep this one short and sweet.

United Vibrations are one of the hottest, most energetic bands to walk the UKs stages in a while. I’ve had the pleasure of sharing many a gig with them and their music never fails to engage. On a personal tip, having broken bread with them at length, I’m as impressed with their ideology and aspirations as I am with the heat scorching up the microphones.

One of their set’s highlights is RA! a fast paced afro-jazz cut with a boom-bap breakdown and energy for days. Funnily enough, the cut is actually in part a celebration of solar energy, the other part being reserved as a homage to the visionary Sun Ra. The single is out now (it was officially launched on the winter solstice) and you can pick it up on ITunes. Vinyl lovers you’re not forgotten. Cop the plastic here.

Here is the video, recorded at the launch party….enjoy

Heads High vs. 12 Tone

HH_12tone_20thDec09

We’ve had a lot of fun with the 12 Tone collective this year. Now our shared session at Vibe has been broken in, we’re getting comfy and beginning to experiment.

The last session of 2009 takes place this Sunday 20th December. It’ll be a good one, you should come. As usual, myself, Duke Etienne, DJ Judge and Cal Jader will hold down DJ duties with live collaboration from Connie Bell and musicians from the 12 Tone camp.

We’ve got some recordings (audio/video) to post from our previous events but for now, check out this  footage of RA! the United Vibrations single which was launched last Saturday and has been garnering attention from Giles Peterson amongst others.

Event: Heads High vs 12 Tone

12 Tone are giants! They play host to the Speakers Corner Quartet, United Vibrations and the all new 12 Tone Brass Band….basically, they’re hot.

Heads High went underground, underwent a transformation and are back with positive direction.

Those that know, know our crews have been artistic friends for a minute now. We decided to make that friendship a little more public and share some events. That’s good for you because you get upfront DJ selections, live vocals, interactive visuals and an array of seriously heavy musicians all under one roof each time we make the link….and for now at least, its as free as Jah intended…

Come and visit us on Sunday, you’ll be glad you did….

Event: 12 Tone @ Passing Clouds

12 Tone are family. It just so happens that they’re outstanding at what they do….and the proceeds of their events always go towards the self-sufficient housing co-op they’re setting up in the heart of Babylon….to provide shelter when it all falls down.

Passing Clouds are family also. They’re working to make our lives better on a large scale and at the local level.

How many crews put on really good parties based around live performance? How many of those channel their earnings for the greater good of humanity?

We’ll see you there.
