zomby

Mystique has long been a powerful tool in garnering interest from the dance music media. I remember picking up the latest offerings from Dillinja back in the day excited by the fact that I didn’t know who he was or what he looked like. The same rule holds true today but evolution has brought us more potent strains of the condition with artists like XL’s SBTRKT and Zomby (pictured) holding down healthy DJ schedules behind public personas they have crafted with the use of masks and subterfuge. Thankfully, both artists work is genuinely innovative and more importantly, damn good so it would seem masks and good music are now synonymous with one another….although i’m not too sure about Zomby’s stylist – looks a little dark if you ask me.

Helter Skelter comes direct from Zomby’s forthcoming ‘One Foot Ahead Of The Other’ offering on Ramp Records.

BIG!

Oh yeah…here’s an excerpt from Zomby’s ‘Godzilla’ video Ramp posted a few weeks back…nice

This one’s for the true school hip hoppers amongst you. You might remember me moaning about the decline of the craft of the Master of Ceremonies. Well, i’m not ready to take back what I said….but I will admit there’s more nice ones out there than I gave credit to. Leimert Park’s CO$$ is one of those. What you think?

I gotta get moving. I’ve just seen the time and all i’ve been doing all day is downloading music, reading about music, talking to Manawar from 3 in Delhi about the poor quality of my mobile phone service (I guess you get what you pay for) and not eating. I’m giving myself till 4pm on this blogging ish then I gotta re-enter the real world….bills need to be paid.

While i’m still here, I just found out that that nice fellow Paul White is offering his Punch Drummer EP up for free download (320mbps no less)…no time for journalistic musings about the quality of his work…just click the link and check it for yourselves. If you haven’t heard of him, I recommend you check this full length offering also….NEXT…

News: G&D back in the Funkmosphere…

eps-cd-9760

I’m a big fan of artists whose work is clearly motivated by a higher source. Don’t get me wrong, my tastes run wide and deep. I don’t get on tracks just because they mention spiritual concepts, but if they’re hot, and their gaze is inward, then it’s me all the way. Both Georgia-Ann Muldrow and Dudley Perkins tick those boxes in my book. They’ve been bringing that spiritual funk from the mothership for a minute now and show no signs of giving it up.

Heads amongst you will be aware that both Dudley’s recently dropped Holy Smokes long player and Georgia’s Umsindo album are currently in stores. I stopped over at Fresh Selects and found a couple of previews from Dudley’s mammoth 26 track offering which I think you should hear. I also found this download for those in the mood for some freeness:

Dudley Perkins – Boogie (ft.Georgia Ann Muldrow & Darryl Moore

If you like that, its all about supporting by putting your money where your mouse is and clicking these links to cop both offerings. Both albums are released on their indie imprint SomeOthaShip so if you like what your hear please complete the cycle and give so you can continue receiving.

Georgia Ann Muldrow – Umsindo

Dudley Perkins – Holy Smokes

Also, you might wanna click here and here for nice, in-depth interviews with Dudley and Georgia respectively courtesy of the LA Record.

For the throwback crew here’s that ‘Money’ vid from way back when….I know Mr Segundo is on this one…

News: Sticky Situation…

Anyone whose been listening to my Heads High shows for SpaceinvaderRadio or represented at our Marketplace session of late will be only too aware that i’ve officially caught the Funky/Broken/Garage/Bashment/Soca bug thats been going around (more virulent than Swine Flu if you ask me). I don’t know whether its a reaction to the cruel snatching away of summer just as we were getting to know one another again, but I can’t get enough of the sound.

On perusing Heatwave’s excellent blog I came across this latest offering from Sticky of Ms. Dynamite Booo! fame. As you may or may not have heard, Sticky had his studio robbed recently, the theives making off with nigh on ten years of his work archived on his hard drives….i’ll pause here to let that sink in….apart from feeling for him personally, I also mourn the loss of the forthcoming heat that may never see the light of day. Karma is unavoidable so those responsible will undoubtably get theirs….for now though, here’s ‘Sticky Situation’ ft. Lady Chann. If you like the sound, I recommend checking out the JA Bashment meets UK Funky article over at Heatwave. Informative and comprehensive. Nice.

On my visit to Okayplayer earlier today I came across this download of a Sly Stone cover they did which is available on their ‘Nuclear Evolution’ long player. A reminder for those of you who haven’t yet copped the album, that you really should’ve by now! Enjoy…

Download: Mos Magnetic…

Our heads are still ringing from Mos’ recent Ecstatic transmission so I was feelin blessed when I heard about this collab with DJ Honda over at BlindIForTheKids. The Hip Hop true school among you will fondly remember the fruits of their last link up so I was ready for big things. Now my taste in hip hop is finicky to say the least so no comment from me. You’re just gonna have to check the link and make your own minds up…

Dj Honda ft. Mos Def – Magnetic Arts

The track is the first cut from Honda’s hIV long player dropping Aug 5th. For more Mos, check exclusive footage of the man all the way live at a recent ‘Pepsi Slam Dunk Classic’ jam courtesy of Frolab.

Happy Birthday Kissey!

kissey

It seems the latest swing is for fresh female lyricists to have birthday’s and give away(or sometimes sell….hmmm) music to celebrate. Head over to Musinah’s blog to cop her new Ocillations Square offering which sounded free but actually costs (don’t panic though, it’s only $7.99 AND you get a free beat tape with every download). For the full freeness though, it’s all about Kissey Asplund’s ‘19′ free download consisting of two songs she wrote when she was 19 recorded with piano accompaniment in a jazz stylee. I would post the links here but I think it’s only right you go see her for yourselves

On an electronic tip, peep this ‘video’ of the ‘When I Dig’ track she did with KidKanevil & Blu lovingly refixed by Mr Vadim and I promise I will never post another youtube clip that doesn’t move again…deal?

Happy Birthday Ladies!
