summer in the uk, music festival-wise is pretty top notch. there r s**t-loadsa outdoor vibes for every kinda person, regardless of genre-preferences. i’ve personally made it my mission to hit as many festivals as possible whenever i happen to be in the british isles during its (so-called) summer.

… the thing is, its pretty hard to keep up with the sheer quantities of these outdoor parties. new ones spring up every year during the season, whether they are off the back of some other bigger festival or they’ve sprung outta someone’s vivid imagination.

increasingly fighting for our attention, promoters have had to get very creative when devising their promotion strategy as of course, there’s no party without the people.

so this takes me to ware, hertfordshire – where standon calling is situated. championing the new ’boutique festival’ genre, it essentially is a garden party that has spiralled outta control. still under 10 years old, standon calling has been able to attract some major artists in the music game. however, rather than settle for mere music, they have taken things one step further by attempting to engage all of our senses.

each year, a theme is set… previous themes have included ‘japanese culture‘ where harajuku girls, camp-fire watching sumo wrestlers, wasabi pods and yakuza gangsters surprised the unsuspecting crowd. this year however, its ‘apollo 11‘. nasa space camps have been erected on the site, there have been promises of telescopic star-gazing, interactive heliocentric performances and secret stages. galileo’s space observatory and CERN’s extra-terrestrial team of will also be present. in short, the entire weekend will pay homage to space and all its intergalactic psychedelia.

to top it off, music’s flag-bearers of all thing cosmic: sun ra’s arkestra are set to headline the event. femi kuti and his positive force, ladytron, N.A.S.A plus the whip will also be presenting their own interpretations of music from beyond our hemisphere.

the festival uses local suppliers, no corporate sponsors, is ethical, green and even gives some of their earnings to charity… u can’t get better than that – do we need another excuse…?

oh yeah.. + there’s a swimming pool.

I’ve been a fan of J.Rawls from day. That old Lone Catalysts ish is heavy, not to mention his work on the BlackStar LP, collaborations with Dudley Perkins, J.Sands, Aloe Bacc, Eric Roberson, J-Live…and the list continues. Truth be told, I was only 1/2 into the Liquid Crystal ‘Jazz-Hop’ project. I bought it (in all its coloured wax glory) and it just lay on the shelf after the first couple of plays. On receiving a copy of his forthcoming Jay Are LP with MC John Robinson, I was expecting a Liquid Crystal continuum, but with lyrics. I was half right, but there are some standout tracks on there. The ‘Lee Morgan Story’ and ‘Love me Good (ft. Dominique Larue)’ jams are both well worth checking, as is the title track ‘Its Jay Are’ which we have a live performance of right here…oh yeah, fans of the J Rawls sound should click here to read deeper about the Jay Are collaboration and download his recent ‘Hotel Beats’ project .

This one’s for the true school hip hoppers amongst you. You might remember me moaning about the decline of the craft of the Master of Ceremonies. Well, i’m not ready to take back what I said….but I will admit there’s more nice ones out there than I gave credit to. Leimert Park’s CO$$ is one of those. What you think?

Video: Karriem Riggins Virtuoso Experience – “Tergiversation”

Ok, I know it’s not that long ago that I mentioned Karreim but I found this video of his ensemble performing ‘Tergiversation” over at OkayPlayer and couldn’t help myself. Heads High is all about artists who represent the merging of styles and the ease with which Mr Riggins moves between that Hip Hop Boom Bap and subtle Jazz accents is enviable to say the least…enjoy…

Update: The player doesn’t do what it’s supposed to and i’m far from an HTML pro so click the V-Tech underneath the player’s ghost to take you where you need to go…that corporate thing feels dirty doesn’t it……

I promised myself I wouldn’t descend into the smutty world of short posts with minimal info in ‘em but it’s 3am and I wanna sleep so you have my apologies.

Check this collection of Sheffield (I think) based photographer Shaun Bloodworth’s portraits of all our favourite Low End superstars. Big up LA Record for the tip…

Event: Dubcasting

satsang dubcasting july 2009 web

This is late in the day I know but i’m fairly sure some of you RSS junkies will pick it up before this evening.

Shubha over at Satsang Productions sent me the above flyer for an event he’s hosting at Dalston’s Passing Clouds tonight. I’m pretty selective with the events I choose to include in these pages but it’s not often you see dub maestro Adrian Sherwood on a Dj bill. I wish I could give you a little more info on him now but I promised myself I’d exit the blogosphere by 4pm. I’m passing through later tonight though so I’ll try my best to get an interview with the man and build a feature around it for the site. Meantime, here’s some classic studio footage of the late, great Sherwood affiliate Bim Sherman

UPDATE: That should read ‘It’s not often I see dub maestro Adrian Sherwood on a DJ bill’. Just spoke to him tonight and he said he’s at Fabric’s Room One next Friday with Dub Syndicate, the Moody Boyz, Shackleton and Scuba. Hold tight for the exclusive interview…

I gotta get moving. I’ve just seen the time and all i’ve been doing all day is downloading music, reading about music, talking to Manawar from 3 in Delhi about the poor quality of my mobile phone service (I guess you get what you pay for) and not eating. I’m giving myself till 4pm on this blogging ish then I gotta re-enter the real world….bills need to be paid.

While i’m still here, I just found out that that nice fellow Paul White is offering his Punch Drummer EP up for free download (320mbps no less)…no time for journalistic musings about the quality of his work…just click the link and check it for yourselves. If you haven’t heard of him, I recommend you check this full length offering also….NEXT…

News: G&D back in the Funkmosphere…

eps-cd-9760

I’m a big fan of artists whose work is clearly motivated by a higher source. Don’t get me wrong, my tastes run wide and deep. I don’t get on tracks just because they mention spiritual concepts, but if they’re hot, and their gaze is inward, then it’s me all the way. Both Georgia-Ann Muldrow and Dudley Perkins tick those boxes in my book. They’ve been bringing that spiritual funk from the mothership for a minute now and show no signs of giving it up.

Heads amongst you will be aware that both Dudley’s recently dropped Holy Smokes long player and Georgia’s Umsindo album are currently in stores. I stopped over at Fresh Selects and found a couple of previews from Dudley’s mammoth 26 track offering which I think you should hear. I also found this download for those in the mood for some freeness:

Dudley Perkins – Boogie (ft.Georgia Ann Muldrow & Darryl Moore

If you like that, its all about supporting by putting your money where your mouse is and clicking these links to cop both offerings. Both albums are released on their indie imprint SomeOthaShip so if you like what your hear please complete the cycle and give so you can continue receiving.

Georgia Ann Muldrow – Umsindo

Dudley Perkins – Holy Smokes

Also, you might wanna click here and here for nice, in-depth interviews with Dudley and Georgia respectively courtesy of the LA Record.

For the throwback crew here’s that ‘Money’ vid from way back when….I know Mr Segundo is on this one…
